Why was the Burrow built like it was?
With such a big family, I'm assuming it was built to have many floors that way each member could have their own space and privacy. Since the children grew up and moved out, I think it was an ideal place for relatives and friends to visit, spend the night or have a small get-together.

I think that the Burrow was built the way it was because it provided enough room for a large family. In a way it actually reminds me of my own family and basically when all of them were living together, it would seem like it's supposed to be crowded. But it did give enough room for them to have their own life within the house and no interruptions.

Wasn't the Burrow built that way because it started off as for just a small family, and as they kept having children, Arthur & Molly added rooms onto it however they pleased? I might be making that up. Hahahah. I think the haphazard way the levels were added on kind of reflects the lives of the Weasleys--crazy, but still organized in a specific way.

I agree with what's been said -- it seems like, from the way it was described in the books, that it's just floors messily stacked on top of floors, like a cake or something. Like Molly and Arthur moved in, had one kid and then just kept going and in order to make room they just kept having to build on top of it!

I agree. Every time they had a new kid (or two with the twins) and realized they didn't have enough space, they just added on. It just happened that they built on top and not around.

Jumping on the band wagon. The Weasleys are poor so an addition would not be in their price range - if wizards even have people to do that for them - so I'm guessing Arthur would be really excited to get down and dirty with some muggle tools and add on another section of the house for whatever new child was on the way. Eventually, the burrow became what it was.
